During my journalism career, I’ve spearheaded multiple long-term and rolling investigations, using hard-fought public records, tips from sources, and detailed data analysis to uncover wrong-doing and hold leaders accountable at a host of government agencies and private companies.

In May 2021, I became an editor overseeing data and investigative projects for Hearst Connecticut Media and the Times Union in Albany. In the fall of 2021, I also began teaching investigative reporting techniques as an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

Before that, I worked for the Boston Globe for more than a decade, most recently as a Spotlight Team reporter.

At the Globe, a yearlong probe that I led, which won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting, uncovered repeated failures to keep problem drivers off the road, prompting immediate change at DMVs and courts across the country. I’ve exposed numerous scandals at law enforcement departments, including breaking a series of stories about stunning twists and turns stemming from a widespread trooper pay fraud scheme at the notoriously secretive Massachusetts State Police.

Soon after the COVID-19 pandemic began, I combed through spending records and public filings that detailed how a curious cast of characters profited from selling personal protective equipment to Massachusetts. One of those companies is now under investigation. I dug up documents showing how employers were failing to keep workers safe from exposure to the virus and how many nursing homes had been failing to meet basic infection control standards.

I’ve exposed inaction by public transportation agencies to fix popular but crumbling infrastructure, as well as delays by Massachusetts – one of the strictest states on gun control – to send key records to federal databases used to screen people when they try to buy firearms.

Amid growing concern about mass shootings, I read stacks of studies and government reports and spoke with numerous experts for an in-depth look into which tactics show promise – and which don’t – for schools trying to prevent such attacks. In the wake of a natural gas disaster here, I pored over records to quickly pull together a series of stories illuminating past failures by the company involved, its parent corporation, and government regulators.

Able to cover any topic under the sun, I’ve detailed a major airline’s track record of animals dying on its planes, dug up documents highlighting security concerns at the prison where Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was murdered, broke the news about actor Kevin Spacey facing criminal charges on Nantucket and subsequent stories about that dramatic court case, and unearthed concerning practices about how President Trump discloses valuable gifts he receives. I’ve also written about marijuana, standardized testing, surprising election results and more.

And everything described above is just a sample of what I’ve accomplished within the past few years alone.

Over the past decade with the Globe, I’ve excelled as a prolific, enterprising digital journalist, known for both speed and accuracy. I’ve covered major stories from the Sandy Hook mass shooting to the Boston Marathon bombings to pivotal elections. I’ve cultivated sources, helping me to not only regularly break high-impact watchdog stories, but also to produce exclusive, colorful, in-depth features about complex topics under tight deadlines.

I’m known in the newsroom as a go-to resource for both analyzing large datasets and hunting down public records, including working closely at times with newsroom attorneys to sue agencies in order to pry important documents loose. I frequently use those skills to collaborate with journalists across the newsroom.

Staying extremely organized and focused has allowed me to multitask on several short- and long-term assignments simultaneously, while remaining flexible to shift priorities seamlessly as needed.

Through a mix of problem-solving and ambition to acquire new skills, I’ve learned some HTML and other basic coding, enabling me to create online interactive graphics to either explain stories on their own or to accompany more traditional coverage. I’ve also helped develop big-picture strategic plans for how content is delivered and presented on Bostonglobe.com, including an initiative I co-led in recent years to explore creative new storytelling formats.
